York St John University wins North Yorkshire Varsity

Published: 11 October 2012

York St John University has won its first home Varsity against Teesside 21–8.

The event on 10 October involved over 700 students competing in 14 different sports including men’s rugby union where York St John triumphed against Teesside with a score of 53-0. Other highlights included a 3-0 win in mixed volleyball, a 6-0 win for the men’s hockey team and both the men’s and women’s York St John University teams won in the rowing events.

York St John and Teesside have been competing in the North Yorkshire Varsity competition for over five years, but this was the first time it was staged in York thanks to the University’s new sports facilities on Haxby Road, which enable multiple matches to take place at the same time.

Adam McSkimming, York St John Students’ Union President, said: “We are all thrilled to have won our first home North Yorkshire Varsity! It was a fantastic day for students playing and supporting the teams, everyone felt a real sense of home pride, and to win 21 – 8 is just amazing! Everyone is looking forward to being involved in, and hopefully winning, many more sporting events at our new sports facilities at Haxby Road. I’d like to thank all the student volunteers that helped make the event such a success.”

The Varsity event took place at six venues around York including the University’s sports halls, all weather pitch and new facilities at York St John University Nestle Rowntree Park on Haxby Road. Venues were also been provided by Red Goat Climbing Centre and David Lloyd and the River Ouse was used for the rowing events.
